GOITS — Drug Tracking System
The Drug Tracking System is a system designed to ensure drug safety and prevent drug smuggling, tracking the process from production/importation to reaching the end user.
The Drug Tracking System (DTS) is the adaptation of the global Track and Trace system to the pharmaceutical sector.
With this system, the location of products in the supply and distribution stages can be determined. Thanks to electronic product code technology, every movement of drugs in the supply chain is tracked from production or importation. The barcodes on each drug box enable the reporting of entries and exits, and the last seen location, time, and status are recorded in the real-time database.
Globally, tracking drugs and medical devices is essential for security, which is why the global trend is towards the traceability of these products.
Today, various studies are being conducted worldwide to ensure the traceability of medical products. Many countries are waiting for the results and want to adapt the most successful system. The Drug Tracking System project initiated by the Turkish Ministry of Health is closely followed by many countries. Many support requests come from countries that want to successfully implement the system in Turkey.
As in the rest of the world, there has been a strong reaction against counterfeit drugs and drug fraud in our country.
News about seized drug boxes and illegal drug production facilities has undermined public trust. Restoring the reliability of drugs has become a necessity. Therefore, the Ministry of Health established the Drug Tracking and Monitoring System in 2010 and started its implementation nationwide.
Drugs must be tracked at every point they pass through. This can be called the genealogy of drugs.
Creating the genealogy of drugs is very important to ensure drug reliability and identify the main sources of counterfeiting. Therefore, the status of drugs at all stages must be continuously monitored; including production facilities, warehouses, and logistics vehicles. This prevents the sale of counterfeit, smuggled, and illegal drugs. Also, since stock status can be monitored, drugs can be recalled by the manufacturer or withdrawn from the market by authorities when necessary.
The main goal of the Drug Tracking System is to ensure 'patient safety'. By analyzing the data collected by the system, patient safety violations can be detected, and preventive measures can be taken to ensure drugs reach patients safely and maintain their trust.
The Republic of Turkey, focusing on human health, has prepared a project to prevent counterfeiting and fraud and track drugs nationwide. The Drug Tracking System (DTS) used in Turkey is the first in the world to be launched in 2010. The system aims to safely deliver drugs to consumers, the final link in the supply chain. Using 2D code technology, DTS enables tracking the past and current status of drugs in the supply chain. All movements in the supply process can be monitored by stakeholders.
The Drug Tracking System works in full compliance with GS1 standards. By applying 2D codes to product packaging, the system ensures traceability, significantly prevents counterfeiting and tax evasion, and provides significant savings.
